Mormon Beliefs

“The first principles and ordinances of the gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentence; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; and fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost” (Articles of Faith 4).  Joseph Smith, the founder of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (sometimes called the Mormon Church) said, “The fundamental principles of our religion are the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, concerning Jesus Christ, that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven; and all other things which pertain to our religion are only appendages to it” (Joseph Smith, Jr. Teachings 121).  Below are some of these “appendages” that stem from the Mormon belief in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Sermon Mount Jesus Christ MormonDo Mormons use other scripture beside the Book of Mormon and the Bible? Yes.  The Doctrine and Covenants and The Pearl of Great Price.  All of these books testify of Christ’s divinity.  All bear witness of Him.

What do Mormons believe about faith? Mormons believe that faith is the first principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.  ”Without faith it is impossible to please [God]” (Hebrews 11:6).

What do Mormons believe about chastity? The power to have children is sacred and a gift from God that must not be abused.  Sexual intimacy is only to be used between man and women, lawfully wedded as husband and wife.

What do Mormons believe about family? The family is the fundamental unit of life and society, both on this earth and in the eternities. Mormons believe in and strive for eternal families.

How do Mormons pray? Because God is our Father, we can speak with Him.  We do so in the name of Jesus Christ, because He is our advocate with the Father.

How do Mormons feel about service? The Savior is the perfect example of exemplary service.  He not only served His followers, but His Sacrifice and Atonement was a service to all who had ever and would ever live.  Mormons count service a blessing and a privilege.  It is by service that we become more like the Savior.

What is a testimony, and how can it be obtained? A testimony, or spiritual witness of divine things, is necessary for one’s salvation.

What is the Plan of Salvation? Mormons believe that everything God does is to make us happy.  All God does is calculated to eventually give us eternal life “the greatest of all the gifts of God” (Doctrine and Covenants 14:7).  The Savior’s Atonement and Resurrection are central to our happiness.  God will do all He can to help us come unto Him–without forcing us.  Agency, or the ability to choose, is a sacred gift from God.

What is the gift of the Holy Ghost? The influence of the Holy Ghost can be felt by anyone.  Faithful members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are admonished to receive the constant companionship and guidance of the Holy Ghost, a member of the Godhead.

Why do Mormons pay tithing? Records of the payment of tithes go back to the Old Testament.  Tithing helps one overcome selfishness and greed, and allows one to participate in the building up of the Kingdom of God on the earth.

What is the Word of Wisdom? Our bodies are sacred.  They are “the temple of the Holy Ghost” (1 Corinthians 6:19).  God asks us to take care of our bodies.  This includes not partaking of harmful substances.
